Effective At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits

As we age and those of us who indulge in coffee, tea and red wine can begin to see the effects on the vibrance of our teeth. Most of us experience some degree of discoloration no matter how well we brush. Whiter teeth can give you a huge confidence boost and give your smile a more aesthetically-pleasing look. If you’re interested in getting teeth whitening in Dallas, TX, we invite you to learn more about our at-home whitening kits.

How Does At-Home Whitening Work?

In-office whitening uses LED light to speed up the stain-lifting process. At-home whitening trays work in a similar way and often use the same ingredients, they just build results more gradually. Instead of having our cosmetic dentist in Dallas, Dr. Bishop, applying the whitening gel and lamp, we’ll send you home with custom-fit whitening trays (they look very similar to clear aligners) and professional-strength whitening agents with clear instructions to follow. Instead of taking time out of your busy day, you’ll pop them in while you sleep and wake up with whiter teeth everyday!

What Are The Benefits?

  • Convenience: One of the primary benefits is the convenience of being able to whiten your teeth at home. This saves time and effort as you don’t need to make frequent visits to the dentist for the procedure.

  • Comfortable and Safe: The custom-fit trays and professional-grade ingredients make the process more comfortable and safer for your teeth and gums compared to some over-the-counter alternatives. Similarly, patients report no gum irritation and less tooth sensitivity after at-home whitening compared to in-office treatments.

  • Cost-Effective: While professional at-home whitening kits might be more expensive than over-the-counter options, they are generally less costly than in-office whitening treatments.
  • Controlled Process: You have more control over the whitening process, as you can choose when to apply the treatment and for how long, depending on your comfort and the desired level of whiteness.

What To Expect

At-home teeth whitening is incredibly convenient and non-invasive, easily fitting in to your busy schedule and evening routine. Here’s what you can expect:

Initial Consultation

Before we get going with your teeth whitening treatment, you’ll need to come in to Dental Dimensions for a consult with Dr. Bishop. We need to ensure your teeth are in good condition and that there is no active gum disease. We often recommend our patients get a professional cleaning before teeth whitening as this tends to produce better results.

Impressions

Once you’ve been approved for whitening treatments, Dr. Bishop will take impressions of your teeth so we can custom-make your whitening trays. These will fit snugly and comfortably in your mouth. These can normally be 3D printed the same day as your appointment.

Treatment

We will send you home with the professional whitening gel and your custom trays. We will demonstrate how much product you need to place in the trays and how to fit and remove them. You can pop them in before you go to bed and wear them for at least 8 hours. Most patients need to wear the trays for a week to achieve the desired level of whiteness but this depends on the severity of your discoloration and how well your teeth respond to the whitening agents.

Maintenance

There’s generally no need to come in for a follow-up immediately after treatment unless you’re experiencing an issue. We recommend patients repeat the process every 6 months to a year depending on how well your whitening holds up/how much staining food/drink you consume.

FAQ

Q: Is at-home professional whitening safe?

A: Yes, when supervised by a dentist in Dallas, like Dr. Bishop, at-home professional whitening is generally safe. Dr. Bishop ensures the whitening trays fit properly, and the concentration of the bleaching agent is appropriate for your teeth sensitivity and whitening goals.

Q: How long does at-home whitening take to show results?

A: Results can vary, but typically, noticeable whitening can be seen within a few days to two weeks. The total duration of the treatment will depend on your specific case and the desired level of whitening.

Q: How long do the results last?

A: The longevity of teeth whitening varies based on lifestyle habits like diet, smoking, and oral hygiene. Generally, the effects can last from several months to a few years.

Q: Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation, especially in the initial days of the treatment. These symptoms typically diminish as the treatment progresses.

Q: Can everyone use at-home professional whitening kits?

A: Most adults with healthy teeth and gums can use at-home whitening kits. However, they are not recommended for children, pregnant women, or individuals with gum disease, worn enamel, cavities, or highly sensitive teeth.

Q: Will at-home whitening work on all types of teeth stains?

Whitening treatments are most effective on extrinsic stains (surface stains). They may be less effective on intrinsic stains (within the tooth) or on discoloration due to aging, medications, or injury.

Q: How do I maintain my teeth after whitening?

To maintain the results, practice good oral hygiene, avoid staining foods and beverages, quit smoking, and consider touch-up treatments as advised by Dr. Bishop.
